The Schoolboys' Own Library
The Schoolboys' Own Library ran for 411 issues from 1925 to 1940 before becoming another casualty of the paper shortage. The SOL was popular with the public but not so with the Authors who saw their work being hacked down to fit the format of the SOL. 53 of the 411 issues were Rookwood tales, mostly from the Boys' Friend. For the 1953 CD Annual Gerry Allison wrote an article "Restoring Order at Rookwood" containing a list of all the SOL Rookwood tales and their origin. He even produces a list of recommended reading order. You can read the article here.
SOL 068 Sir Japhet's Heir by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1928 this issue contains a Rookwood story taken from the 1920 Boys' Friend issues 981-986.
SOL 076 The Fighting Form Master by Owen Conquest. This story tells of the arrival of Dicky Dalton, the fighting form Master. Printed in 1928 this issue contains a Rookwood story taken from the 1921 Boys' Friend issues 1030-1033, 1037-1040.
SOL 084 Chums on a Tramp by Owen Conquest. The Cheery chums of Rookwood tramp the highways and by-ways. Printed in 1928 his story is taken from the 1922 Boys' Friend issues 1103-1110.
SOL 100 His Own Enemy by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1929 this story is taken from the serial story in the Gem issues 1033-1046 originally printed in 1927-28. This issue is a sub story believed to have been written by Kenneth E. Newman. 'Not for the first time has Valentine Mornington's headstrong, unruly nature been the cause of trouble in the Fourth Form at Rookwood. Seldom, however, has it led to such lengths....'
SOL 108 Facing the Music by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1929 this story is taken from the 1917 Boys' Friend issues 848-849 and 853-855. "Several sorts of a rotter he may be, but not even VALENTINE MORNINGTON'S worst enemy would call him a thief. Yet that is the accusation the dandy of the Fourth has to face in this powerful story of Rookwood School"
SOL 124 Gunner Gets Going by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1930 this story is taken from the 1922 Boys' Friend issues 1089-1093 and 1101-1102. "Something really unique in new boys, is Peter Cuthbert Jenner! And events at Rookwood School become more lively with the advent of the newcomer and his weird and wonderful ways!"
SOL 128 Backing up Jimmy. Printed in 1930 this story is taken from the 1917 Boys' Friend issues 723-726. "A lively long complete school story, featuring JIMMY SILVER & Co., the irrepressible chums of Rookwood School!"
SOL 132 Under False Colours. Printed in 1930 this story is taken from the 1922 Boys' Friend issues 1112-1118. "featuring JIMMY SILVER & Co., in a sparkling long complete Rookwood School!"
SOL 136 Printed in 1930 in the SOL this story was originally produced for ex-Magnet editor H. A. Hinton's 'School and Sport' publication. Hamilton was never paid for it but still retained the copyright so he sold it to the A.P. and it appeared in Boys' Friend in 1924.
SOL 138 The Ghost of the Priory was printed in 1930 and is taken from the 1922 Boys' Friend issues 1125-1132. 'Christmas thrills, fun and adventure - all in this exhilarating complete story of Rookwood School, starring the ever popular Fistical Four, Jimmy Silver & Co.
SOL 146 Jimmy Silver & Co. Out West by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1931 this story is taken from the 1923 Boys' Friend issues 1140-1145. "All Aboard for the Wild West! Embark here for a topping long trip to the backwoods of Canada with Jimmy Silver and Co. of Rookwood. Thrills, fun and adventure guaranteed."
SOL 150 Pals of the Ranges by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1931 this story is taken from the 1923 Boys' Friend issues 1152-1155. "All the thrills and glamour of the Wild West are packed into this gripping book-length story in which Jimmy Silver & Co., on holiday in Canada pay a prominent part in rounding up a gang of rustlers"
SOL 154 The War Trail by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1931 this story is taken from the 1923 Boys' Friend issues 1161-1165. "On holiday out in the wild west, Jimmy Silver & Co., of Rookwood, have faced many perilous adventures, but none so thrilling as in this gripping yarn of their encounter with Redskins on the war trail."
SOL 158 Chums of the Ranch by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1931 this story is taken from the 1923 Boys' Friend issues 1169-1174. "An enthralling book-length complete story of mystery and adventure in the Wild West, starring JIMMY SILVER & Co., the cheery chums of Rookwood School"
SOL 162 Trailing the Phantom by Owen Conquest. Printed in 1931 this story is taken from the 1923 Boys' Friend issues 1175-1180. "The weird and wonderful stunts of TEXAS LICK, from the Wild West, cause a sensation at Rookwood School, and consternation for the Christmas ghost at JIMMY SILVER'S home."
SOL 226 The Fifth Form Rebellion by Owen Conquest. Mr Greely is dismissed and the Fifth march out of Rookwood in support and take up their quarters at a rival school. Printed in 1934 this issue contains a Rookwood story taken from the 1925 Boys' Friend issues 1246-1252.
SOL 371 Asking for the Sack. Printed in 1939 this issue features Len Lex the detective at Oakshott school. This story is taken from the 1936 Modern Boy issues 479-484.
