The Marvel (New Series) ran from 30th Jan 1904-22nd April 1922, a total of 952 issues before merging with the Sport and Adventure. Hamilton wrote some stories for this publication and in fact introduced Hurree Singh to Netherby school several years before he appeared in the Magnet.

The following is an extract from the article "Hurree Singh - Inky to you - And the Boys of Beachwood." (Anon) from the CD Annual of 1968.

"It is not very well known that Hurree Jamset Ram Singh, Nabob of Bhanipur, was by far the oldest of the characters who made up the world-famous Famous Five. He was created several years before the Magnet was born and before Harry Wharton and Bob Cherry went as new boys to Greyfriars. Well over sixty years ago, the author wrote a series of stories about the boys of Netherby School. The heroes were Third Formers; they were Owen Redfern, Lawrence, and Hurree Singh. Eventually Netherby was closed, owing to an outbreak of scarlet fever, and some of the Netherby boys, including Redfern, Lawrence, and Hurree Singh went to Beechwood Academy. Most of these stories were published under the name of Charles Hamilton, but some appeared under the name of Martin Clifford. There is little excuse for any boys of that far-off age not realising that Charles Hamilton, Martin Clifford, and Frank Richards were one and the same man. Very few of these old tales are still in existence today. They have never been much sought, for the simple reason that very few readers knew of their existence in the way that some readers knew of and coveted the Jack Blake stories before Tom Merry was created. In 1908, in Magnet No. 5, some of the boys of Beechwood, including Hurree Singh, went for a temporary stay at Greyfriars. Hurree Singh alone became a permanent and much-loved member of the Greyfriars cast. It is an odd freak of Hamiltonia that Redfern, Owen, and Lawrence (the names now used for 3 boys) turned up as scholarship boys at St. Jim’s in 1912. Only the names were the same. They were clearly not intended to have any connection with the Netherby boys.

When Hurree Singh featured in the Greyfriars Gallery in the Magnet in 1917 it was mentioned that he came originally from Beechwood Academy. There was no mention of Netherby, which strongly suggests that Pentelow was unaware of the existence of the school. He was in the same boat as most Magnet readers. (Note, the artist was Hutton Mitchell)"

There are 3 Hamilton stories from this period listed below, click on the link to read or download them.

Marvel 150 from 8th Dec 1906 is a complete scan of the story paper. It contains a Hamilton story centred around Headland School, yet another of his many creations.

Marvel 161 is also a complete scan of the story paper. In this issue Inky arrives at Netherby school and joins the rugby team. Interestingly his English is much better here than it was to become later in the Magnet!

Marvel 208 contains the main story scanned from the CDA of 1968. In this issue Netherby is closed down due to an outbreak of Scarlet Fever and some of the boys, Inky included, move to Beechwood Academy.
