The Greyfriars Herald (Series 1) ran for only 18 issues in 1915/16 until it became yet another victim of the wartime paper shortage. The stories were allegedly written by the schoolboys but were mainly by sub writers with the notable exception of the Herlock Sholmes stories which were original Hamilton yarns.    There was little mention of the 'Ha'penny Herald' in the Collector's Digest but Tom Hopperton wrote an article for the first issue of his 'The old Boys' Book Collector'. You can read the article here.

   The second series of the Greyfriars Herald appeared on 1st Nov 1919 and in it we are introduced to yet another Hamilton school - St Winifred's. The school doesn't actually feature in the stories as it has been forced to close for structural repairs. Instead the boys move to the Benbow, an old warship which has been refitted as a school.
    In issue 32 the Benbow sets sail for the West Indies and for the next 30 issues schoolwork takes second place to adventure stories as Jack Drake and his chums hunt for treasure in the jungle.
   Issue 62 sees the boat's return to England and Jack Drake moves to Greyfriars with his chum Dick Rodney. During this period Hamilton was writing genuine Greyfriars stories for the Herald yet the subs were writing Greyfriars tales for the Magnet!    Drake's Father then manages to lose his fortune (for the second time!) and in issue 89 Drake becomes Ferrers Locke's assistant with Rodney being quietly dropped. Bill Lofts wrote an excellent article on Ferrers Locke for the Collectors' Digest issue 534. You can read it here on page 9.
  In issue 33 the Herlock Sholmes stories returned. In his "Lets be controversial" column in the Collectors Digest issue 331 Eric Fayne looks at the Herlock Sholmes stories in some depth. Issue 126 was the final issue. The editor announced that the paper was "joining hands" with the Marvel and the combination of the Herald and the Marvel was going to be a great success. The Marvel closed 3 weeks later so I think the Editor was being a touch optimistic! You can read the editorial here.

The Greyfriars Herald title changed to The Greyfriars Boys' Herald before becoming the Boys Herald. The whole series is generally known as the Greyfriars Herald to avoid confusing it with the much earlier Boys Herald
