The Boys' Herald

The Boys' Herald ran from 1st August 1903 to 18th May 1912 (461 issues) before being replaced by Cheer Boys Cheer. It is probably best known for the Sexton Blake and early Nelson Lee (Maxwell Scott) stories which featured regularly but Charles Hamilton did contribute around 50 Cliveden School stories over a 2 year period.

Some of the Cliveden stories were later rewritten as Rookwood stories and appeared in the first series of the Penny Popular. It didn't really work as Hamilton's writing style changed tremendously from 1907 to 1915, the characters were completely different, and the stories had to be drastically cut. Thanks to Michael Bailey you can read scans of the Rookwood tales in issues  237 and 239 of the Penny Popular and judge for yourself!

Most of the Hamilton stories from the Boys' Herald are available for download. Click on the link from the table below to read them on line or download to your computer.

Many of the Cliveden stories were later reprinted in the Dreadnought.

The listing below has gaps I would like to fill so if you can help please get in touch even if it is only to confirm whether a particular issue has a Hamilton story or not. Obviously scans or photocopies of the missing issues would be much appreciated!  If you can help in any way then please contact me.

A number of the story papers in this section were scanned by Allan S from the collection of the British Library and are reproduced with their kind permission. © British Library Board
